In ancient Greece criminals and fugitive slaves were branded on the forehead and that black mark indicated their role in life. Stigma, in ancient greek, actually means black mark, a sign.
Whit the time passing between cultures and literature, this word has changed meaning, loosing his moral connotation, meaning now a mark, a symbol, an influence.
Artists themselves have been often stigmatised but at the same time every artist has his own specifics marks, something personal that makes him unique. For these reasons we have decide to call us Stigma.
Street art has struggled to be recognized ad art, for too many times it had to be subjected to the stigma of vandalism before to be seen as something which came from the streets and talks to the streets, refusing the the idea of an inaccessible or elitist art.
